job search help

Finding a job can be stressful. By asking for some job search help, your experience becomes much easier. Utilize these sources when finding your next position.

Personal Relationships

Since we’re wired to connect with and help others, utilize personal relationships to help you find your next job. Whether striking up a conversation with the person next to you in line, introducing yourself to other parents at your child’s school, or chatting with your neighbor, networking can move your job search forward. Since people do business with people they know and like, networking is an excellent way to find work. You join a smaller pool of candidates by finding out about openings before they’re posted. By writing down all your family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, colleagues, and casual acquaintances, you’ll find you have a much bigger network than you thought. Your job search will grow naturally from your primary contacts and introduce you to other networks of people who can help you find what you want. When talking with others about your job search, be specific about what you’re looking for, and ask if they have any information or contacts in a relevant field.

Social Networks

Ensure you utilize Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social networking in your job search. Since the majority of open positions aren’t posted online, you’ll want to search for hiring managers, rather than job descriptions. Identify the top-five companies you’d like to work for.   Use a search engine to track current workers and connect with one directly. Compose a message stating who you are and what your career interest is. By your third or fourth message, ask if there’s an available opportunity you might fill. You can also conduct Twitter searches to follow and connect with recruiters and learn more about their companies. Ensure your profile includes a short bio, where you’re from, a LinkedIn link for recruiters to access more information about you, and a professional picture. Update your entire LinkedIn profile and include the same picture as your Twitter account. Get recommendations from supervisors to demonstrate your skills and work ethic. Import your contacts so you can grow your network. Conduct job searches, and reach out to the companies that interest you most.

Staffing Agency

A staffing firm can set you up with jobs that match your skills, experience, and expertise. The other job search help they can provide is resume-building tips and interview coaching. Their services won’t cost you anything, they know the local labor market, and have a large network of companies in various industries from which to draw. You’ll learn about unadvertised jobs, earn top pay for your work, and save time by having the staffing agency follow up after interviews.
